S.S. Orford:

Entertainments Committee leaflet including names of committee members plus Balance Sheet and names of prize winners of on-board events – fancy dress dance, whist drive, bridge tournament, aquatic sports, gymkhana and various other competitions.
Probably 1928?

Wooden Horse Racing Club – Summer Meeting Race Card 27th September 1928.

Am happy to send photos -please email me.

Many thanks.

I have held onto it as I was told it was removed from officers mess when SS ORORD was run aground in Marseilles.

The pocket square is called ‘Into the Storm’.

It is the story of a Caribbean cruise on the ‘Orford’. It’s available to view at the British Film Institute in London.

This may help you in narrowing down when your wife’s great uncle took command of the ‘Orford’. Captain Owens was next given command of the latest Orient Line liner ‘Orion’, which had its maiden voyage during August 1935.

The Orford’s last voyage as a cruise ship was under command of Captain Norman Savage who was my wife’s great-uncle. I am trying to determine when he took command and if he was the Captain when it was bombed and set on fire on 1 Jun 1940 – I am under the impression that he was.

He was later Captain of the SS Oronsay when it was sunk by the Italian submarine Archimede on 9 Oct 1942. I am also trying to determine when he took command of the Oronsay.

Any leads would be appreciated

Hi Meg
I am not qualified to value it, but if you email me a copy of both sides of the postcard I will add it to this post. Perhaps someone will see it and give you a helpful valuation?
